Sam Drukker in De Volkskrant newspaper

Artwork of the week

Every week De Volkskrant discusses a work of art that now requires attention. This week:  De gewasseninkttekenaar (1990) by Sam Drukker.

Sam Drukker indulges in the freedom of the self-portrait

Self-portraits offer more freedom than regular portraits. One does not depend on the availability of others for it, nor does one have to take their sensitivities into account. You can look weird or unflattering on it. Or both.  It is all attention and mindfulness. Sam Drukker's gaze is also not so much judging or validating. Rather inquisitive, probing. It is the gaze that Drukker's models see when he portrays them: that of the artist at work.
