Exhibition: Piet Sebens - The bowl and me | Museum De Buitenplaats, Eelde

Piet Sebens. The bowl and me January - 12 to May 5, 2019

Museum De Buitenplaats presents Piet Sebens from 12 January to 5 May 2019. The bowl and me. In this exhibition, Museum De Buitenplaats presents Sebens' still lifes together with a selection from the collection of Asian ceramics from the Ceramics Museum Princessehof in Leeuwarden.

Piet Sebens' work is known for its balanced compositions and the precision with which it is painted. Each work is based on intensive viewing, craftsmanship and perseverance. It is a time-consuming process that has led to a modest oeuvre. The bowl is a frequently recurring source of inspiration. It is a form that takes up a lot of space. The convex exterior and concave interior of the bowl also provide a visually interesting reversal of the light. What makes the bowl and other forms of use ceramic so attractive to the artist is that they are intended to be used. Bowls, as well as plates and bowls, have something tactile that painting lacks.

Sebens' fascination is particularly focused on the subtle and beautifully glazed Asian ceramics. That is why it was decided to show his work together with Asian ceramics from the extensive collection of the Ceramics Museum Princessehof. In addition, some objects from Sebens' own ceramics collection are shown, which almost coincide with the development of his painterly oeuvre. Bowls, plates, pots, saucers and vases from China, Japan and Cambodia, among others, are visibly displayed in his studio. And every now and then one gets a place in a still life.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog with texts by Eline van den Berg, Stefan Kuiper, Piet Sebens and Isabel Heijne.
