Gerard Huysman (Zaandam, 1953) lives and works in Alphen aan den Rijn. A graduate of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam (1973–1978), he has spent decades exploring the city's architecture through painting.

Huysman's work is driven by the search for those fleeting moments when light, space, and atmosphere briefly align. Rather than portraying Amsterdam as a vibrant metropolis, he reveals its quieter side: streets suspended in stillness, where time seems to slow and familiar places take on an almost cinematic presence. Light is the central protagonist, shaping both the composition and the emotional resonance of each painting. Human figures appear only occasionally, never distracting from the rhythm and geometry of the built environment.

Working from observations made in the city, Huysman completes his paintings in the studio, where memory and imagination gradually replace direct observation. Starting from a loose sketch, he refines the image through broad tonal contrasts before carefully constructing its layers of light. Throughout the process, architectural elements are shifted, colors adjusted, and details omitted or invented in service of the composition. The resulting paintings are not literal records of Amsterdam, but distilled, poetic interpretations that invite viewers to experience the city anew.
