Erkin (Uzbekistan, 1957) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tashkent before continuing his education at the Film Academy in Moscow in 1977. Inspired by 16th and 17th century Dutch and Spanish painting, as well as Chinese porcelain from his homeland, he creates carefully balanced still lifes filled with light, texture, and atmosphere. Antique bowls and plates, often worn or cracked, play an important role in his work, adding character and history. Working in the tradition of the Old Dutch Masters, Erkin paints in multiple delicate layers using handmade paints from a factory founded in 1644.
