Philine van der Vegte

Philine van der Vegte is a contemporary figurative artist mainly painting in oil. Based on a former dairy farm just north of Amsterdam, she finds many of her subjects close to home: animals, portraits and landscapes. Her work is particularly concerned with the complex relationship between humans and animals, exploring themes of dependence, trust and responsibility.

Working both from life and in the studio, Van der Vegte combines direct observation with expressive, gestural brushwork. The movement of animals requires speed and intuition, and traces of this search remain visible in her paintings. Broad strokes and a strong sense of scale bring an immediacy to her work, from intimate studies to life-size depictions of animals.

Van der Vegte graduated from Wackers Academy Amsterdam in 2019 and received a Gerbrandy Fonds grant in 2020 to study sight-size portraiture at Sarum Studio in Salisbury. Her work has been exhibited at, among others, Waterlandsmuseum De Speeltoren, Museum Staal, Museum Nairac, Museum De Fundatie and the Papiermachermuseum in Austria.
