Overzicht

In this duo exhibition, two Spanish artists engage in a quiet dialogue of light, atmosphere, and contemplation. Although the work of J. Sánchez Zabaleta and Carlos Diaz differs in subject and visual language, both evoke a remarkable sense of calm and timelessness.

Zabaleta presents a refined series of still lifes featuring books, fruit, flowers, and delicate glassware, carefully arranged in intimate compositions. His paintings echo the tradition of the old Spanish masters, with subtle contrasts of light and shadow that lend the works a meditative quality. In an age that often seems to have stripped the world of mystery, Zabaleta quietly reveals that the mystical still survives, hidden in silence, in light falling across a glass, or in the presence of a simple object. His new works are an invitation to slow down, reflect, and linger.

Carlos Diaz transports the viewer to sun-drenched patios and secluded courtyards. Bougainvillea, oleander, and weathered Spanish walls create scenes filled with warm light, deep shadows, and a languid Mediterranean atmosphere. His work captures the poetics of the ephemeral through the temporality of shadows: fleeting moments of stillness suspended in the heat of the day. Empty lounge chairs seem to await a quiet afternoon of reading and repose.

Together, these artists create a world in which time slows down: a place of silence, beauty, and gentle escape.

The exhibition J. Sánchez Zabaleta & Carlos Diaz is on view from 13 June until 4 July.
